The role of Consultant is a position of responsibility within the company, directly reportable to the Principal Consultant / Director of the Company.  The role may require attendance at sites and meetings across the UK, some periods away from home are required as a part of the role.   You will be expected to represent the company at all times in a professional manner.

Main Duties and Activities:

  • Undertake site visits across the UK to undertake site works and project managing environmental, geotechnical and contaminated land site investigations.
  • Prepare reports concerning, contaminated land and geotechnical investigations both quantitative and qualitative using all current risk assessment methodologies.
  • Provide reports / photographs concerning, site progress, site conditions and any health and safety issues, where required;
  • Provide assistance to Graduate Engineers as required;
  • Provide input of information at monthly meetings, and assisting with update to reports and library database of all new legislation.
  • Submission of quotations to clients.
  • Preparation of rates for Company Accountant to invoice;
  • Liaising with clients, professional advisors, contractors and general public.
  • Undertaking the design and management of geotechnical and contaminated land assessments from inception through to completion.

Any other duties consistent with the job description that may be required from time to time.

General Office and Personnel Procedures:

  • Site data and documents pertaining to projects must be uploaded daily over Geosphere Environmental Ltd’s Cloud System.
  • The employee should contribute to the required office culture, conduct and discipline to encourage enjoyable, productive and efficient working of all personnel.
  • The employee’s sound working relationships with the team and other employees within the multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Provide assistance with regards to marketing the company across the UK where and when required.
  • Attend/present CPD courses and be responsible for your own personal development.
  • Keeping the office, workshop, vehicles and company property clean and in good order.
  • Attend work progress meetings at designated offices, when requested by senior staff.
  • Recruitment is carried out in line with safe recruitment practices such as DBS checks.

Pre-requisite: A Level 2 Bat Licence is preferable, but not required for application

GEL has a fantastic opportunity for an Senior Ecologist / Principal Ecologist to join our thriving and growing ecology team.

The ideal candidate will have broad experience and knowledge of UK ecology including ecological survey, legislation, biodiversity policy, licensing methods and ecological mitigation techniques, including their delivery. You will also have experience in preparing and ideally reviewing reports and documentation to support planning applications, depending on the level appointed. This role would suit a proactive individual who wants to work in a growth area of our business and help support the delivery of ecological services in a client focussed commercial environment.

Depending on the appointed level, you will:

  • Work closely with other members of the team and colleagues in other technical disciplines, delivering ecological support on a variety of projects with opportunities to manage (or task manage) a range of exciting projects.
  • Act as project lead, designing, and leading multi-species surveys (including bats, reptiles, badgers, great crested newts, otter and water vole etc).
  • Conduct technical reporting (including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, UK Habs surveys, protected species reports, Ecological Impact Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments and others) and review reports.
  • Provide support on bid writing.
  • Mentor junior staff in order to support the growth and development of the ecology team.


As the successful candidate you will ideally:

  • Hold relevant degree qualification;
  • Be a member of CIEEM;
  • Have excellent fieldwork skills with experience of a range of fauna and flora survey methods;
  • Have knowledge of relevant UK and European environmental legislation;
  • Hold a level 2 bat licence;
  • Have the ability to undertake surveys, often with quickly changing schedules;
  • Be willing to work outside normal office hours as required;
  • Write reports in a timely and technical fashion;
  • Have the ability to use own initiative and be proactive;
  • Hold a full clean UK driving licence.


Preferably, You Will Also Have:

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in ecological consultancy or related work.

The role of Principal Arboricultural Consultant is a responsible position within the company directly reportable to the Technical Director or Directors of the Company.   • Maintaining high standards of delivery of arboricultural consultancy through keeping up with technical standards and current guidance and providing technical review for arboricultural reports.
  • Working outside of normal office hours to assist on ecology surveys if workload requires.
  • Provide supervision (where required) of trainee arboriculturalists/work experience detail when requested.
  • Preparation and submission of fee proposals.
  • Liaising with clients, professional advisors, contractors and general public.
  • Acting as job manager for QA purposes as determined by the Technical Director.
  • Undertaking the design and management of arboricultural assessments and method statements from inception through to completion.

  • Professional membership of the Arboricultural Association (or application pending).

  • Organisational, project management and report writing skills.
  • A full driver’s licence valid in the UK.

Role Overview

As a Site Technician, you will play a vital role in conducting ground investigation works on a variety of project sites across the UK. You’ll assist with site setup, sample collection, data recording, and equipment maintenance to ensure safe and accurate results. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to work outdoors, travel to multiple sites, and gain experience in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.

Key Responsibilities

•  Conduct site investigations and collect soil, rock, and water samples as required
•  Operate, maintain, and calibrate equipment to ensure accurate results
•  Assist in setting up and dismantling drill rigs and other site equipment
•  Record data accurately and communicate findings to the project manager

Requirements

•  Strong practical skills and a willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
•  Full UK driving license (required for travel to project sites)

•  Basic understanding of health and safety practices in construction is a plus
•  Willingness to work away from home on projects as needed

Role Overview:

To assist with an increasing range and number of projects, Geosphere Environmental are now seeking to appoint a BNG Ecologist. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a vibrant, growing team and benefit from a mix of survey and office work.


Roles and Responsibilities:

As a BNG ecologist, you will play a key role in delivering ecological services on a wide range of projects, from feasibility through to planning, and biodiversity gain sites including habitat creation and long-term monitoring. The position can be tailored to suit an existing graduate looking to make the next step in consulting up to an established senior ecologist, depending on your background. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking and overseeing UKHab, NVC and botanical field surveys on a wide range of habitats across England.
  • Producing technical reports including preliminary ecological appraisals, condition assessments of habitats, biodiversity net gain assessments and habitat management and monitoring plans.
  • Provide clear ecological advice and interpretation of BNG assessments to clients.
  • Produce required GIS mapping on QGIS.
  • Support and mentoring junior staff (senior level only)
  • Contribute to business development, including assisting with project planning, fee proposals and client liaison.


Essential skills/experience:

  • A degree in ecology or related discipline.
  • Ideally with at least 1-2 years’ experience.
  • Proven botanical experience.
  • Experience of habitat surveys and report writing.
  • BNG experience and use of the statutory biodiversity metric calculation tool.
  • Good working knowledge of UK environmental and nature conservation legislation.


Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork.

Desirable skills/experience:

  • CIEEM membership (or working towards)
  • FISC level 3+ certification.
  • Project management and client-facing experience.
